College success requires much more than intelligence, strong reading skills, or knowing how to take good notes. Students may arrive on campus academically capable and still struggle to keep up with assignments, manage their time, remember expectations, initiate difficult work, or recognize when they are falling behind.
The difference is often executive function (EF).
Executive functions are the cognitive and behavioral processes that help us manage ourselves and our actions in order to accomplish goals. They allow a student to determine what needs to be done, figure out how and when to do it, maintain attention, manage competing demands, monitor progress, and adjust when something is not working.
This becomes particularly important during the transition from high school to college. In high school, students often have extensive external structure: teachers remind them about assignments, parents may monitor grades, classes meet daily, and missing work is often quickly identified. College removes much of that scaffolding. A student may have several days—or several weeks—between classes, multiple assignments due at different times, few reminders, and complete responsibility for deciding how to use their time.
Research supports the importance of EF in higher education. A large study of more than 1,300 first-year university students found that attention, planning, self-control, and self-monitoring were associated with students’ academic progress during their first year. (PubMed Central (PMC)) Another study of university students found that EF difficulties explained approximately 31% of the variance in academic performance, although the authors appropriately noted limitations in sample size and generalizability. (ScienceDirect)
For students with ADHD, learning differences, autism, or other neurodivergent profiles, EF challenges may be especially consequential. A systematic review published in 2024 found that ADHD symptoms in college students were associated with lower academic performance, with executive functioning and study strategies among the factors influencing outcomes. The good news is that executive functioning is not simply a matter of being “responsible” or “mature.” Students can learn strategies, build systems, practice skills, and develop greater independence.
Here are seven executive function skills that can make a significant difference in college success.
1. Planning: Knowing What Needs to Happen
Planning is the ability to identify a goal and determine the steps required to accomplish it.
For a college student, planning might sound simple:
“I have a biology exam next Thursday, so I need to study.”
But effective planning requires much more than recognizing that an exam exists.
A student must determine:
- What material will be covered?
- What resources should I use?
- How much material do I need to review?
- How many study sessions do I need?
- When will I complete those sessions?
- Do I need to ask for help?
- What other assignments or commitments compete for my time?
This is where college can expose weaknesses that were less visible in high school.
A student who has always relied on teachers or parents to break assignments into manageable steps may suddenly be expected to do that independently. A 20-page research paper is not one task—it is a sequence of tasks: selecting a topic, researching, reading sources, developing a thesis, creating an outline, drafting, revising, editing, and submitting.
Planning turns an overwhelming task into a series of manageable actions.
Planning is particularly important because research has repeatedly connected EF difficulties with academic performance. In a study examining college students with ADHD, organization and motivation-related EF were particularly important predictors of functioning, and organization was associated with end-of-year grades. What planning looks like in college
Effective planning means students learn to:
- Identify the desired outcome.
- Break large assignments into smaller steps.
- Estimate how long each step will take.
- Determine deadlines for individual steps.
- Put those steps into a calendar or task-management system.
- Review the plan and adjust it when circumstances change.
A calendar full of due dates is not necessarily a plan. A plan tells the student what they need to do before the due date.
2. Time Management: Turning Time Into a Resource
One of the biggest surprises for many freshmen is that college schedules can look deceptively empty.
A student might have only two classes on Tuesday. It can feel as though they have an entire day available.
But that “free” time actually contains reading, studying, assignments, meals, exercise, transportation, work, social activities, appointments, and rest.
Time management is the ability to understand how much time is available, estimate how long tasks will take, prioritize activities, and allocate time intentionally.
This is difficult for many students because time is abstract.
Students may genuinely believe:
“I’ll do it later.”
The problem is that “later” is not a time-management system.
Effective college students learn to translate time into specific commitments:
“I will read Chapters 4 and 5 from 2:00–3:00 Tuesday.”
instead of:
“I need to read sometime Tuesday.”
Time management also involves recognizing that tasks frequently take longer than expected. A student may assume an essay will take two hours when it actually requires five.
Research on college students with ADHD has specifically examined organization, time management, and planning (often referred to collectively as OTMP skills). Interventions targeting these skills have demonstrated improvements in students’ use of organizational strategies and academic functioning. (PubMed)
Helpful college time-management strategies
Students can benefit from:
- Using one primary calendar.
- Scheduling study time—not just classes.
- Working backward from deadlines.
- Estimating task duration and then comparing the estimate with actual time.
- Building in transition and buffer time.
- Identifying high-energy and low-energy times of day.
- Limiting multitasking.
- Creating recurring weekly routines.
The goal is not to schedule every minute.
The goal is to help students make intentional decisions about their time rather than allowing the most immediate demand to determine what happens next.
3. Organization: Creating Systems That Reduce Cognitive Load
Organization is much more than having a clean backpack or an uncluttered desk.
For college students, organization means creating reliable systems for managing information, materials, assignments, digital files, appointments, and responsibilities.
A student may understand every concept in a course and still lose points because:
- The assignment was forgotten.
- The file was saved somewhere inaccessible.
- The textbook was left at home.
- A deadline was written on a piece of paper that disappeared.
- The student cannot find their notes.
- They submitted the wrong version of an assignment.
These are not necessarily academic knowledge problems. They are systems problems.
Good organizational systems externalize information so the student’s brain does not have to remember everything.
For example, instead of relying on working memory to remember five assignments, the student can use a task-management system. Instead of trying to remember where a document is stored, they can establish consistent digital folders.
Organizational skills interventions have been associated with improvements in organization of materials, homework management, time management, and planning, with some evidence that these improvements can contribute to better academic functioning. (PubMed)
The key question is:
“Where does this information live?”
Students should ideally have a predictable place for:
- Assignments
- Course syllabi
- Class notes
- Study materials
- Calendar events
- Important emails
- Long-term projects
- Personal responsibilities
The best organizational system is not the most sophisticated one.
It is the one the student will actually use.
4. Task Initiation: Starting Without Waiting to “Feel Ready”
Task initiation is the ability to begin a task without excessive delay.
This is one of the most misunderstood executive function skills.
A student may know exactly what needs to be done and genuinely want to do it—but still be unable to get started.
College creates countless opportunities for task-initiation difficulties:
“I’ll start my paper tonight.”
“I’ll study after dinner.”
“I’ll respond to that professor’s email tomorrow.”
“I’ll register for classes this weekend.”
Eventually, the deadline creates enough urgency to force action.
For some students, urgency becomes their primary motivational system.
The problem is that this often leads to stress, sleep deprivation, lower-quality work, and a cycle of procrastination.
Research with college students has linked procrastination with multiple EF domains, including time management, organization/problem solving, restraint, motivation, and emotion regulation. (PubMed)
Task initiation becomes easier when students stop treating “do the assignment” as the first step.
Instead, they identify the smallest possible starting action.
For example:
Instead of:
“Write my psychology paper.”
Try:
“Open the document.”
Then:
“Write the title.”
Then:
“Copy the assignment question.”
Then:
“Write three ideas.”
The goal is to reduce the activation energy required to begin.
Other strategies include:
- Using a five-minute start.
- Setting a timer.
- Working alongside another person.
- Starting with the easiest component.
- Removing distractions before beginning.
- Creating a consistent study-start routine.
- Identifying exactly what “done” looks like.
Starting is a skill.
Students do not have to wait until they feel motivated to begin.
Often, motivation follows action rather than preceding it.
5. Attention and Filter-Focus: Managing What Gets Through
College students live in an environment of extraordinary distraction.
Phones vibrate. Notifications appear. Friends walk by. Music is playing. Group chats are active. Multiple browser tabs are open. Social media is constantly available.
Attention is therefore not simply the ability to “pay attention.”
Students need the ability to direct, sustain, shift, and protect attention.
Filter-focus is the ability to determine what deserves attention and what can be ignored.
A student studying in a dorm room may need to consciously filter:
- Incoming texts
- Social media
- Background conversations
- Email notifications
- Household chores
- Thoughts about an upcoming event
- Other assignments
- The temptation to check something “just for a second”
For students with ADHD or other attentional differences, this can be particularly challenging. In college students with ADHD, inattention has been associated with academic difficulties, and current research continues to examine EF-focused interventions targeting attention, organization, planning, and time management. Attention management may include:
- Turning off nonessential notifications.
- Putting the phone in another room.
- Using website blockers.
- Choosing a low-distraction study location.
- Working in shorter focused intervals.
- Identifying the most important task before opening a computer.
- Using headphones or environmental sound strategically.
- Taking planned movement breaks.
The goal is not perfect concentration.
The goal is intentional attention.
Students need to learn that attention is something they can actively manage rather than something they simply hope will happen.
6. Working Memory: Holding Information in Mind While Using It
Working memory is the ability to temporarily hold information in mind and work with it.
It is essential to college learning.
Consider what happens when a professor explains a multi-step problem. The student must remember the first instruction while processing the second. When reading a textbook, the student must hold earlier information in mind while connecting it to new material.
Working memory also plays a role in everyday college functioning.
A student might need to remember:
“I need to email my professor, finish my lab, pick up my prescription, and bring my ID to the testing center.”
Without an external system, some of that information is likely to disappear.
Research examining executive functions and study success describes working memory as a core EF involved in keeping information active and working with it. The same research highlights the relationship among working memory, attention, inhibition, and effective learning strategies. (PubMed Central (PMC))
Students can support working memory by externalizing information.
Instead of trying to remember everything:
- Write it down.
- Use checklists.
- Take structured notes.
- Use visual organizers.
- Break multi-step directions into smaller steps.
- Repeat important information.
- Use reminders.
- Keep frequently used information in predictable locations.
External supports are not signs of weakness.
They are cognitive tools.
A student does not need to remember everything internally if the environment is designed to help them remember.
7. Self-Monitoring: Knowing How You’re Doing Before Someone Else Tells You
Perhaps the most important EF skill for college independence is self-monitoring.
Self-monitoring is the ability to observe your own performance, compare it with expectations, identify problems, and make adjustments.
In high school, adults often perform this function for students.
A teacher might say:
“You’re missing three assignments.”
A parent might say:
“Your grade is dropping.”
A counselor might say:
“You need to start studying earlier.”
In college, the student must increasingly become the person who notices.
Self-monitoring means asking:
- Am I keeping up?
- Do I understand the material?
- Have I completed the reading?
- Am I meeting deadlines?
- How much time am I actually spending on this?
- Is my current strategy working?
- Do I need help?
- What should I change?
Research with first-year university students found that self-monitoring, along with attention, planning, and self-control, was associated with first-year study progress. (PubMed Central (PMC))
Self-monitoring also creates the foundation for problem solving.
If a student recognizes:
“I keep missing morning classes,”
the next question becomes:
“Why?”
Maybe the student stays up too late. Maybe the alarm is ineffective. Maybe the student needs to prepare clothes and materials the night before. Maybe the class is scheduled at a time when the student’s sleep pattern makes attendance difficult.
The important shift is from self-judgment to self-observation.
Instead of:
“I’m terrible at college.”
The student learns to ask:
“What is not working, and what can I change?”
That is executive functioning in action.
EF Skills Are the Bridge Between Knowing and Doing
One of the most important things families can understand about executive function is that knowledge and performance are not the same thing.
A student may know how to study but not initiate studying.
They may know an assignment is due but fail to plan for it.
They may understand the material but forget to submit the assignment.
They may care deeply about their grades but struggle to translate that motivation into consistent action.
This is why telling a student to “try harder” is often ineffective.
The more productive question is:
“Which executive function skill is getting in the way, and what support or strategy can make that skill easier to use?”
Research increasingly supports the importance of EF and related self-regulation skills in higher education. A 2023 study examining EF and self-regulated learning described executive functions as critical to learning, study success, and flexible behavior. (PubMed Central (PMC))
For students with ADHD, interventions specifically targeting organization, time management, planning, attention, procrastination, and related EF skills have shown promising results. (PubMed)
And importantly, EF challenges are not limited to students with ADHD. Every college student relies on executive functions to navigate the increasing independence and complexity of university life.
Preparing Students for Independence
College readiness should therefore mean more than asking:
“Is my student academically prepared?”
Families and educators should also ask:
- Can they manage their own calendar?
- Can they break a long-term assignment into steps?
- Can they estimate how long something will take?
- Can they begin a difficult task without an adult prompting them?
- Can they organize their materials?
- Can they protect their attention?
- Can they use strategies to support working memory?
- Can they recognize when they are struggling?
- Can they ask for help?
- Can they change strategies when the first one doesn’t work?
These are not “soft skills.”
They are functional skills that help students convert academic ability into academic performance.
The goal is also not to create a student who never needs help. Independence does not mean doing everything alone. In college and throughout adulthood, successful people use calendars, reminders, coaches, tutors, professors, advisors, peers, technology, and other supports.
True independence is knowing what you need, knowing how to get it, and knowing how to use it.
The Bottom Line
The transition to college represents a major shift in responsibility. Students are expected to move from externally managed schedules and frequent adult reminders toward self-directed learning and decision-making.
That transition can be exciting—but it can also expose executive function gaps that were previously hidden by structure.
The seven skills that can make the greatest difference are:
- Planning — knowing what needs to happen and creating a path to get there.
- Time Management — allocating time intentionally rather than relying on urgency.
- Organization — creating systems for managing information, materials, and responsibilities.
- Task Initiation — starting tasks without waiting for motivation or a crisis.
- Attention & Filter-Focus — directing attention toward what matters and filtering distractions.
- Working Memory — holding and using information while completing complex tasks.
- Self-Monitoring — recognizing what is working, what is not, and when to adjust.
When students develop these skills, the goal is not simply better grades.
The larger goal is empowered independence.
A college student who can plan, organize, initiate, focus, remember, manage time, and monitor their own performance is developing the foundation for success far beyond college—at work, in relationships, and in everyday adult life.
Executive function skills are not about making students fit into a particular definition of success. They are about giving students the tools to understand how their brains work, identify what they need, develop effective systems, and take increasing ownership of their goals.
College readiness isn’t just about knowing enough to succeed. It’s about being able to manage yourself well enough to put what you know into action.

College is a major transition—and it is not always a lack of motivation that gets in a student’s way. Sometimes, the missing piece is an executive function skill that has not yet become automatic.
